Project Overview

Datum Groundworks was appointed to deliver a comprehensive Section 278 highways improvement scheme to facilitate access to a new Aldi store. The project involved the reconstruction of the A28 Canterbury Road between the M20 motorway bridge and the Bybrook Road junction, creating a safe and efficient connection to the new development while enhancing the surrounding highway network.

Scope of Works

The scheme included:

• Full reconstruction of the A28 carriageway.
• Construction of new traffic islands and modifications to existing islands.
• Upgrades to highway drainage infrastructure and utility ducting routes.
• Widening of footpaths and incorporation of new cycleway facilities.
• Installation of coloured high-friction surfacing to improve road safety.
• Replacement of traffic signal equipment, including new SCOOT detection loops.
• New road markings, hatching, bus stop improvements and installation of stainless-steel road studs.

Challenges

One of the project's greatest challenges was maintaining traffic flow on this busy route throughout the construction programme. With the exception of a carefully planned road closure required for surfacing operations, the road remained open to motorists 24 hours a day while work progressed around live traffic.

To minimise disruption to local residents, businesses and road users, significant elements of the programme were delivered during night-time working hours. This approach enabled critical activities to be completed safely and efficiently while keeping the project on schedule.

Results

Despite the complexities of working on a live highway, the project was delivered successfully, providing improved access to the new Aldi store and enhancing the wider transport infrastructure in the area. The completed scheme offers safer facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, improved traffic management and upgraded road infrastructure that will benefit the local community for years to come.

The project stands as an excellent example of Datum's ability to deliver complex highway and infrastructure works safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption to the public.
